Great! …pics of my nailbinding in a book about nailbinding… :)

Ulrike Claßen-Büttner wrote a nice book about nailbinding:

Nadelbinden
Was ist denn das?

Geschichte und Technik einer fast vergessenen Handarbeit
Ulrike Claßen-Büttner
ISBN 978-3-8482-0124-2

This book is at the moment just available in German but it is a very good source for everyone who would like to know more about nailbinding – techniques, history and also examples of nailbinding all over the world as well as modern examples of its useage – that’s actually where you can find the pictures of my nailbinding (page 112 – pic. 151 & 153 – one of my nailbinded and embroidered neck warmers and my nailbinded and embroidered mittens & cap combination).

I especially like the part about the several possible stitches/techniques like the “Oslo” stitch, the “York” stitch, and many more… and the best of all – also for the ones among you who don’t understand German – she provides great step-by-step pictures for all techniques and even more – how to start and how to connect for the second row…

I think this small book is a great addition for everyone who is interested into nailbinding and I am very looking forward to reading mine. :)

…working at my new silk underdress – hand sewing :)

Wien-20120408-00245_1…the beautiful fabric for my new silk underdress :)

Wien-20120408-00246_1…I ironed the silk to get it flat enough to be able to cut and sew it :)

Wien-20120409-00247_1…based on 1/2 of the measurement around my breast + some seam allowance I cut out a strip of fabric 2 times the hight from the ground to my shoulders + some extra length…
…here I add a thread line at the middle of the fabric to mark the shoulder seam, to make the insertion of the sleeves easier and also to know where I have to cut out the neck opening…

Wien-20120409-00248_1…based on my arm measurements + ca. 20cm surplus in length because of the kind of fabric I made a sleeve pattern and cut out the sleeves…
…and a small gore for the arm pit…

Wien-20120409-00249_1…handsewing my sleeves – here I insert the gore for the armpit – I use white silk thread to sew my white silk fabric :)

Wien-20120411-00253_1…pinning my sleeve to the body of the underdress…

Preparing for Double Wars

Finally I finished the hem of my silk veil – woohooo – and yes, I am thinking about embroidering it, but not now ;) …I have still too much to sew for Double Wars :)

…yesterday I started to cut off the machine sewn parts from an old full circle cloak I made many years ago – the wool still looks lovely and I want to redo the sewing by hand… still struggling with myself if I want to do daggings at the bottom border or just a normal hem… well, it’s a huge cloak, it could take quite long to cut out the daggings and to hem them… *lol* …and well, shall I line it? *lol*

…and what else? …yay, prewashing a lot of fabric – already prewashed the lovely silk I bought at Gulf Wars for a nice 12th century underdress… and some blue wool for a 12th century overtunic… next I guess I will prewash some purple linen for a 12th century cote with just normal sleeves to be worn with the woolen surcote… I think I have somewhere some lovely tablet woven trim I could use for it I once swapped for some embroidery… :)

…and there is still my white woolen dress… after i washed it and ripped out the fur, I need to line the embroidered parts… I had to shorten the dress because of some moth damage at the bottom border but – thanks to my sis EzaBella – I got a lovely idea for a shorter 12th century surcote with daggings at the bottom border…

yay, I promise, more photos for you soon ;)

…another 12th century dress :)

Finally back in Vienna after two great months in the states – I attended several SCA events like Gulf Wars and got to know many awesome people, many of them became good friends and very good friends… my friends, I miss you! :*

…let’s start with the dress project I started shortly before Gulf Wars – unfortunatelly I had no time to prewash the fabric and after washing it, it was too short for me…
…but I found a great new home for this dress in Florida and i hope Kahina will have a lot of fun wearing it :)

For the very first time I made a slit neck and this kind of sleeves – I am very glad how it turned out.
